Mr. O'Malley became an associate of RHA, Inc., in 1991 following a
long and illustrious career with Union Standard Insurance Company.
His extensive industry management experience has led to him serving
as a consultant on a wide variety of projects, ranging from
litigation regarding bad faith and claims-handling to setting up of
claims-handling departments.
Mr. O’Malley was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He graduated from the
University of Tulsa with a Bachelor’s of Arts degree in law. He
later earned the Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter designation
(CPCU). Mr. O’Malley has also been certified in compliance with the
alternative dispute resolution requirements of the State Bar of
Texas for commercial mediation.
Mr. O’Malley’s extensive insurance industry management experience
has led to consulting on a variety of projects. These projects
include opinions on industry standards, management of claim
investigation, agency evaluations and resolution of policy terms. He
has also served as an expert witness in insurance litigation and as
a commercial mediator.
His professional career started with the Unigard Insurance Company
as a Claim Representative in Tulsa, Oklahoma; later progressing to
Claims Manager in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and on to Dallas, Texas,
as the Claims Manager for the North Texas area.
Mr. O’Malley joined the Union Standard Insurance Company of Texas as
Vice President of Claims and General Claims Manager in 1975 when it
was acquired by the W.R. Berkley Corporation. He also served as
Secretary of the company. He organized and restructured the entire
claims department upon acquisition of the company by the holding
company, establishing consistent reserving practices, policies and
procedure manuals and lawsuit management. He was later promoted to
Executive Vice President with responsibility for marketing, claims
and underwriting for the entire company’s standard business.
In 1981, Mr. O’Malley was elected President and CEO of Union
Standard Insurance Company, Union Standard Insurance Company of
Oklahoma and Attorney-in-Fact for Union Standard Lloyds, and was
responsible for profit and loss for all companies. He also served as
President of the Brookhollow Insurance Agency. His responsibilities
as president of these companies included strategic planning, problem
solving, analyses of markets, issuing underwriting guidelines, state
regulatory work, budgeting, agency relations and setting claim
standards, practices and procedures. He also served as a Director of
Berkley Risk Retention Group Managers, Inc.
Mr. O’Malley is a member of The Society of Chartered Property and
Casualty Underwriters and also the CPCU’s Consulting, Litigation and
Expert Witness section. He was involved in the Dallas Chapter of
CPCU education committee and was active on several committees for
the Texas Insurance Advisory Association, an organization that makes
recommendations to the Texas State Board of Insurance. Mr. O’Malley
also participated in the National Association of Independent
Insurers’ President’s Seminars, the CPCU Forum for insurance company
presidents and the CPCU Forum for insurance company claims vice
presidents. Mr. O’Malley is a member of the American Board of
Forensic Examiners and a past member of the Nationwide Inter-Company
Arbitration Committee and the Claims Managers Council. He is a
licensed adjuster, local recording agent and risk manager.
